Karen is a Yiddish and Hebrew singer based in Melbourne, Australia. She began performing in Yiddish at a young age both in song and then as a regular cast member of the Melbourne Yiddish Theatre. Karen has sung at many community celebrations, commemorations and concerts. For 13 years she was the lead singer of popular Melbourne Jewish band, ‘Jacob’s Dream’. Karen has been a regular performer at In One Voice festival, Yom Hashoa Commemorations and Yom Ha’atsmaut celebrations, and has been actively involved in productions by the Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre.
Even as a child, she found herself sensitive to the powerful lyrics and spellbinding melodies expressed in Yiddish music. While Karen has sung so many varieties of music in a number of languages, she has always been drawn to the heart and soul of those life-affirming Yiddish songs she encountered in her youth.
It has been Karen’s lifelong dream to create her album ‘Mazl – Journey through Yiddish song’ – songs which have been passed down from generation to generation, reflecting the richness of Jewish life and culture. With its modern musical interpretations, she aims to keep this music alive, relevant and accessible, and contribute to the revival of the Yiddish language. Most recently, Karen has been playing and performing Jewish music with her Ukulele. She also teaches Ukulele to adults and children.
